IPAA Queensland Breakfast in collaboration with MGD Wealth

Behavioural Science in the Wild: Breaking down the Complexity of Human Decision-Making

ABOUT THIS EVENT

People are complex.  We are not always rational.  We are biased.  We are influenced by many external and internal factors when making decisions.

So, how do public purpose workers understand the nature of people, how they make decisions, think about trade-offs, and the influences that are at play when consumers, stakeholders, and constituents make decisions?

IPAA Queensland in collaboration with our partners MGD Wealth were delighted to invite the public purpose sector to our next event collaboration for the public purpose community.

This breakfast event shared insights from our special guest keynote speaker Dr Ryan O. Murphy, Global Head of Behavioural Insights at Morningstar, a world leading provider of independent investment research.  Dr. Murphy’s extensive experience in interdisciplinary behavioural science and behavioural economics made this a key event for public purpose managers and leaders interested in finding out more about their own decision-making habits and biases, and the implications of this subject matter when designing policies for our communities. During his keynote, Dr Ryan O. Murphy shared some top reads about behavior. For more, read our blog here.

Ultimately, humans are limited in their ability to make perfectly rational decisions…in all areas of life, but how can this realisation better support the development of effective policies by the public purpose sector?

The event included closing remarks from John Barton, Chief Executive Officer of MGD Wealth, who holds professional knowledge in behavioural economics and psychology.

The full event recording is available to watch.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

Ryan O. Murphy, Ph.D., Global Head of Behavioural Insights – Morningstar

Dr Murphy is a social/behavioural scientist who researches how people make decisions. Ryan often uses formal models that conceptualise people as perfectly rational decision agents (i.e., they optimize expectations and understand probabilities perfectly) and contrast these idealised decision makers with real people’s behaviour from experiments.

Currently working at Morningstar in the finance industry as the Global Head of Behavioural Insights, he was previously the Chair of Decision Theory and Behavioural Game Theory at the ETH Zürich, and a visiting professor in the economics department of the University of Zürich. Prior to these roles, Ryan was a research scientist and the Associate Director of the Center for Decision Sciences at Columbia University in New York.
