Message from the President: Strengthening Public Purpose Together
Stepping into the role of President of IPAA Queensland is a privilege I approach with humility and a clear sense of responsibility. I joined IPAA Queensland because I believe deeply in the importance of strong institutions and the role that capability, connection, and professional stewardship play in sustaining them.
IPAA Queensland is unique in its ability to bring the public purpose sector together; across agencies, roles, generations, and all levels of government. It is a vital platform for fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and strengthening the craft of public administration.
This belief is rooted in my own journey. Having migrated from a part of the world marked by conflict, I have a profound appreciation for the stability, opportunity, and trust that effective public institutions make possible. The public sector is the backbone of this stability, and organisations like IPAA Queensland play a critical role in building the confidence and capability that underpin it.
My role at the Public Trustee has only deepened this perspective. As an independent statutory authority with over a century of service to Queenslanders, the Public Trustee occupies a unique position within the broader system. Connecting institutions like ours more closely with the public sector and the communities we serve is essential to improving our collective performance and delivering better outcomes for all Queenslanders.
These motivations: a commitment to institutions, a belief in public purpose, and a desire to contribute to system leadership—sit at the heart of why IPAA Queensland matters.
Acknowledging leadership and welcoming Shona
I want to take a moment to acknowledge the exceptional leadership of Tanya Hornick, whose steadiness and integrity have guided IPAA Queensland through a period of transition, leaving the organisation well-positioned for the future.
I also extend my gratitude to Andrew Wills for his four years as Director. His contributions to IPAA’s growth, partnerships, and profile have left a lasting legacy.
Finally, I warmly welcome Shona Germanos as interim Director. Shona’s deep public sector experience and strong values will undoubtedly strengthen IPAA’s important work. I look forward to working with her as we continue to build on the foundation laid by those before us.
Looking ahead: our shared priorities
As we look to the year ahead, the Council will continue to guide IPAA’s direction with discipline, consistency, and a focus on the broader system. Together with our Secretariat, members, and partners, we are committed to:
• delivering the Strategic Plan with rigour and clarity
• making prudent decisions that ensure quality and long-term sustainability
• strengthening membership value and engagement to meet the needs of our diverse community
• connecting all levels of the public sector, from graduates to Directors-General, to foster collaboration and shared learning
• lifting pride in the profession and recognising the lived craft of public administration.
We will also continue to ask the constructive questions that matter most to the sector:
• Where can IPAA add the most value?
• How do we support capability and leadership across the sector?
• How do we remain a trusted partner as the operating environment evolves?
These are not inward-looking questions. They are about ensuring that IPAA Queensland is equipped to support the sector in meeting its challenges and opportunities with confidence, clarity, and purpose.
My invitation to you
Whether you are a member, a partner, or someone considering joining, I invite you to engage with IPAA Queensland.
We are here to support the public purpose sector to:
• Connect with peers and leaders across the sector.
• Learn from thought leaders and practitioners who are shaping the future of public administration.
• Lead with confidence in a complex and evolving environment.
Together, we can strengthen the public sector’s capacity to deliver for Queenslanders and ensure our institutions remain resilient, trusted, and effective.
I look forward to working with you in the year ahead. Let’s connect, collaborate, and lead with purpose.
